Senior Project
Writer's Guild
For my project I would like to do two things that have to do with creative writing. The first part is a club or “Writer’s Guild” that I want to start. The second part is writing a bunch of short stories and putting them into a book, website, etc. It has always been my passion to write stories and share my ideas; Hopefully I can make something out of this project to benefit my future career.
For the Writer’s Guild, I hope to attract the attention of students who have creative ideas but have no idea how to express them. Or perhaps a student wants to write but is not very adept at writing or is having trouble being creative in general. I plan to have everyone participate in a number of exercises in an attempt to help them practice. An example of an exercise involves the students writing a backstory for an inanimate object. The goal for this particular exercise is to anthropomorphize this inanimate object- To make it more human. As a bonus, I may visit other schools to sort of inspire young children to write.
My secondary goal is something I am very familiar with. I plan to write a book consisting of my own short stories. I have over sixty pages of just character dialogue and basic descriptions of setting archived on my computer. All are compiled in a sort of script format. They all make up the dialogue of short stories; In a way these are over sixty pages of first drafts.
As a child, I often came up with character concepts that sort of reflected myself or an event in my life. Stephen King once said that only the best ideas worth writing about stick with you for a long time. These character ideas I came up with as a child have been with me for over twelve years. Over time these characters have gone through a vast number of rewrites and development.
In the future I hope to share my ideas with the world; Perhaps other people do too. This is why I want to start up this Writer’s Guild. I want to push myself but also help others do the same. Overall, this is the goal of my senior project.
This project is important because writing is important. Literature is very influential on culture. Good stories bring lessons and themes wrapped in an entertaining plot. I issue a challenge for someone to come up with just one reason on why writing hasn’t shaped us as a species. All in all, we need writers in this age
